Brigham Young University is not like other schools. Being an institution of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is a core part of its identity, and influences BYU’s mission in every way. This makes BYU not merely an institution of higher learning, but one of spiritual growth as well.
The uniqueness of BYU was highlighted by Michael L. Roberts, managing director of BYU Alumni and External Relations, during a devotional he delivered at the Marriott Center last Tuesday, October 21st. He emphasized that for Church and university leaders, “Education is about more than just a job or degree, it is about developing the whole person– mind, spirit, and character.” This is a guiding tenet behind not just the aims of BYU, but behind the Church’s approach to education overall. This principle, according to Roberts, has led BYU to adopt a unique model for education– one that does not simply teach students, but helps them to achieve their divine potential.
Driving this point home to the crowd, Roberts stated, “You are here for a divine purpose. You are in a place where people love you and want you to succeed.” He then gave an account of his journey at BYU, both as a student and as faculty, and underscored the blessings and opportunities that arose along the way. Pointing out that this experience wasn’t unique just to him, he said, “You also have this opportunity to connect with many faculty, staff members, fellow students, and our amazing alumni. The next person you meet might open doors for you that will change your life.”
To find these doors and achieve their divine potential, Roberts encouraged students to “ponder and reflect on the Lord’s loving guidance in your personal journey to BYU, and the purpose He has for you while you are here.” This serves as a reminder to all students and faculty at BYU that the Lord’s hand is in our lives, and that if we allow it, He will use us in His greater plan. It also reiterates that our purpose at this school is not only to receive education, but to grow spiritually and become shining examples to the world of the fruits of the Gospel.
