Following the victory of President-elect Donald Trump, BYU Mathematics professor David Cardon posted the following message outside his office door:

AD 4nXewC Hg2ekHNUR7bh2HblC111eKN Tzx7tAZZeMgeFO8BB OfnlM3mP4XzWYg2pVSqUiatel0YjiIfY8cMiX9KrZ MThx5v9pD7OEvTA7lcVDMrQJdovC8KL9hcv3QOC Sfmy3X69L3Ssw8xTk8PG4Tmrng?key=KUqno2V56MpDOw4XP65zbLCY

BYU is one of the most politically diverse universities in the United States, with conservatives, moderates, and liberals making up large shares of the student body. Many students in Dr. Cardon’s class likely voted for President Trump; the blatant hostility shown to Trump voters thus creates a risk of sowing the seeds of dissension and conflict among his students.

Indeed, using scripture to publicly condemn one’s political enemies does little to soothe tensions after a competitive election season. Accusing potential students of triggering the “judgments of God,” placing the moral responsibility of the resulting destruction on their shoulders, is inappropriate, no matter the victor.

The official position of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is political neutrality. As part of its guidelines for members, the Church does not “[e]ndorse, promote or oppose political parties and their platforms or candidates for political office.” Furthermore, the Church does not “[a]dvise its members on how to vote.”

The Church, as of Wednesday, November 6, 2024, formally congratulated President Trump on his win. The statement, released from the Church Newsroom, reads:

“We congratulate President-elect Donald Trump on his election as the 47th President of the United States of America. We invite all to pray for him, other elected officers, and leaders of nations around the world.”

The Church also called everyone to become “peacemakers” and commended Kamala Harris for her public service.

  1. I absolute agree that the voice of the people have chosen wickedness. The Book of Mormon was written for our day. I think it no coincidence that we study the Book of Mormon as a church when our presidential elections come around. I also think it no coincident the Mormon included stories of king Noah (Mosiah 11), Amlici (Alma 2-3) or Amalickiah (Alma 46, 51) in the Book of Mormon. These stories have so many parallels to Donald Trump it’s startling. Another example can be shown when you look at a sea of Trump supporters where they have “marked themselves with red in their foreheads” (Alma 3:4, 13, 18). Mormon saw our day and knew what stories to include. They were given to us as a warning. Through the voice of the people we now know we are truly in the latter part of the last days.

  2. Regarding Dr.Cardon’s remarks.

In so stating that Trump is Evil, isn’t VP Harris evil as well? If she were elected, wouldn’t the same fulfillment of those scriptures occur? Her promiscuous behavior in destroying a marriage is not evil? Her positions which go against the Proclamation of the Family are not evil? Her position on elective abortion is not evil? Seems to me that Dr. Cardon likes to take the Burger King approach toward the scriptures. He likes to have it his way. 1 Nephi 4:13 in my opinion is more appropriate, unless of course Dr. Cardon doesn’t believe in the Book of Mormon or the brethren….the hypocrisy….oh the hypocrisy…Let he who is without sin Dr. Cardon.

    1. Well, for one she didn’t break up a marriage, given it was already broken and the guy had already been dating other women for a decade.
And 2, what’s more in line with church teachings and policies: allowing for abortions, so those who need medical care to save the mothers life can get it, or allowing to make the hard choice in cases of rape, incest, or the child not being able survive being born, which also means some will use their agency to get sinful abortions; or controlling people’s ability to exercise their agency by fully banning abortions, which has and will continue to lead to mothers dieing?

One of those sounds to me like the plan we talk about of letting people make their choices, while the other sound like how we often teach Satan’s plan, limit agency.

    2. I completely agree with you Dr. Brigham Young was far from perfect as was Moses. The Lord works with imperfect people to bring about his work. Voting for the Harris/Walz team was completely antithesis to LDS standards. Voting has been a choice in the lesser of two evils for decades now.

From President Oaks’ 2021 conference talk:

“There are many political issues, and no party, platform, or individual candidate can satisfy all personal preferences. Each citizen must therefore decide which issues are most important to him or her at any particular time. Then members should seek inspiration on how to exercise their influence according to their individual priorities. This process will not be easy. It may require changing party support or candidate choices, even from election to election.

Such independent actions will sometimes require voters to support candidates or political parties or platforms whose other positions they cannot approve. That is one reason we encourage our members to refrain from judging one another in political matters. We should never assert that a faithful Latter-day Saint cannot belong to a particular party or vote for a particular candidate.”

  4. While I don’t disagree with the sentiment (or his right to express it), I think it’s a bit of a stretch to imply that this is the first time a wicked leader has been chosen by the voice of the people in this country. (Especially given it’s his second term)

  5. David Cardon…So I guess you are ok with killing a baby in the 9th month, mutilating children for gender surgery so they can never reproduce. I guess you are ok with millions entering the country illegally and now 300,000 kids are missing and most have been sex trafficed. I guess you approve of having our freedom of speech taken away especially during Covid and the move to socialism, high taxes, cost of food, gas, housing, wars and rumors of war etc. etc.. Why don’t you read Ether 8:23-24 because the Democratic Party is the party of secret combinations!

    1. I fully support Dr. Cardon and applaud his courage for standing up for what’s right. Shame on the cougar chronicle for trying to twist this and victimize students who chose to vote for Trump.

    2. Yikes. You drank that kool-aid all gone.

Universities are a place for critical thinking, dissension, and opinions. Removing diversity of thought from BYU, my alma mater, is doing all a disservice. Especially our sheltered youth.

  6. BYU‘s vice president of academics needs to meet with the students in his classes and give them a “get out of jail free card“ to be able to leave his classes without any negative repercussion to their grades. If this guy believes in the “destruction” of people who don’t vote his way, I can only imagine what grades he would give to a student, who showed any indication of voting Republican.

  7. I remember this “Doctor” from my ward years ago. He’s part of a group that protests the priesthood actively at church. They were purple as a symbol of their protest and group. I call them “Purple People Eaters”. It’s a mind virus with first symptoms being limited common sense. He’s actively protesting at a voluntary organization, church, when he could simply walk away. But then again his paycheck is attached to his membership.

  8. David Cardon was one of my favorite professors at BYU. I took 4 classes from him. He is a great teacher, a talented mathematician, and a really decent guy. I wouldn’t have posted this on my door. But if what he wrote offends you, please don’t respond by attacking him. We have too much contention in the Church, dividing us along political lines.

    1. In science your statements are subject to peer review. If he cannot stand having is statement to be test and challenged, than he must deserve a participation trophy.

  9. I’m thinking that Dave would not have posted this should Harris had won, albeit her “evil list” far out weighs Trumps. Wah wah, what a baby!

  10. This is the very first News site that I’ve ever favorited and I’m an older man (who just doesn’t favorite news sites. Once I read this then I seeing all of BYU’s contact info at the bottom…………….WELL DONE 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻!!!! I just can’t get over how amazing that was I really can’t! My family can’t afford allot (bad year) but I will seriously see what I can donate as I know sometimes organizations online (such as news) sometimes scrape by even though you work hard and do stories I’m actually interested in (you know REAL, actual news occurring without filler AND with all of the pertinent information. I don’t believe in harrassment, threats, cut down’s etc. But I do believe in giving my opinion and you can make them just as upset without cursing, sarcasm (extreme sarcasm anyway) and everything else I’ve stated above of what not to do.
Anyway just a #1. job seriously my wife will love this lol she’s got a weird sense of humor as well (our hobbies being contacting people, schools, businesses etc.) when they put something disgusting to be seen in a public place, try to insult or intimidate those with a different opinion (especially kids). Basically trying to cut the disease out before it effect’s everything (ONLY with civility and being somewhat polite) the trick is talking to the right person lol.

  11. This man’s argument is equivalent to saying that choosing to take a shower over a bath is against god’s will because water is evil.

  12. Chris Cuomo said it best: “You gotta stop thinking that the people who support Trump are like Trump, that they speak like Trump, that they act like Trump. They don’t,” Cuomo said in video circulating on social media. “They want to hire Trump to do a dirty job. They want him to be a virus to the political corpus. They want him to disrupt, to destroy, to demean those that they disrespect and dislike, the system that they distrust and despise. They want someone to do what they believe has been done to them and that they cannot do themselves.”

“That’s why they don’t care that he exhibits terrible behavior, because they’re putting him into a terrible place,” Cuomo continued.

  13. Later in that chapter we see Trump as Mosiah is described.
40 And they did wax strong in love towards Mosiah; yea, they did esteem him more than any other man; for they did not look upon him as a tyrant who was seeking for gain, yea, for that lucre which doth corrupt the soul; for he had not exacted riches of them, neither had he delighted in the shedding of blood; but he had established peace in the land, and he had granted unto his people that they should be delivered from all manner of bondage; therefore they did esteem him, yea, exceedingly, beyond measure.
